Ballentine's Boat Shop has earned a reputation in classic boat circles for thorough and meticulous restorations of original Herreshoffs. Over a hundred Herreshoff 12s have come through our doors for care or restoration over our 45 years in business. We have completed both partial and complete rebuilds and our work sets the standard for authenticity and craftsmanship. Each boat has a story and owners choose to invest in their boats for different reasons. Many want to pass their boats down to their children and grandchildren and others recognize the significance of the design and want to preserve the boat for its historical value. Our work makes sure the legacy continues for either reason.

GOBLIN (HMCo. 1194 – retains original builders plate) was built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in 1931 and has been under the current owner's care for nearly three decades. In 2017, the boat was given a thorough winter refit by Ballentine's with work including, replacing forward and aft bulkheads, new cockpit sole, and new mast and spars. Additional tasks completed were to strip her topsides, interior, bottom, all brightwork, and refinish each to traditional aesthetics. Her original planked decks were brought to bare wood, fiberglassed, and repainted. Lastly, new varnished fir cockpit benches and supports were installed matching the original seats.

While GOBLIN's recent work was not a stem to stern restoration, the work addressed critical areas of deterioration. With continued yearly maintenance and care, GOBLIN will provide her next caretaker many happy years on the water.
